Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty

The blepharoplasty is surgery aimed at the correction of the bags of fat that appear over the years on the upper and lower eyelids and which create an aged and tired appearance.

It is a simple surgery with a quick post-operative recovery and with excellent and long-lasting results.

Anaesthesia

Normally local anaesthetic and sedation is used.

Surgery

The blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis and does not require hospital admission.

This surgery of the upper eyelids consists of removing surplus skin and restoring normal tension to the muscle.  In cases that require it, the sacs of fat can also be removed.

For the lower eyelids, the sacs of fat which can occasionally become quite large are removed.  This can be done directly through the skin by making a small cut under the eyelashes or internally, in the conjunctiva, accessing the sacs from the inside of the palpebral conjunctiva and without cutting the skin.

The duration is around an hour.

Frequently asked questions about the blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery

What post-operative care must I follow?

The first few days until the next consultation with the doctor who performed the surgery, you must take the medication prescribed and use anti-inflammatory methods such as the local application of cold sterile compresses or cold gel mask.  You will use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops and you may also be prescribed artificial tears.  In the mornings, when getting up, it is advisable to wash the eyelids with fresh camomile water.

It is advisable to refrain from scratching or rubbing the eyelids and in the presence of signs of ocular irritation such as conjunctivitis, it is best to call your doctor before taking any measures on your own.

The use of sunglasses is recommended for the first few days and from 4 or 5 days after the surgery you can apply a little make-up.

The stitches will be removed on day 5 and everyday life can practically be resumed after 1 week although small oedemas (signs of inflammation) may take some 20 days to disappear completely.

Will eye shape change?

Normally one can appreciate a greater degree of palpebral aperture (larger eyes), greater intensity in the gaze and more rejuvenated eyes on the whole, as in one’s youth.  There should be no other changes, neither should the eyes appear round.

What are the specific risks associated with a blepharoplasty?

As with any surgical intervention there may be a risk of haemorrhage, infection, ocular irritation, slight asymmetry which requires a small retouch and in rare cases ectropion or a sensation that the lower eyelid is turning outwards with continuous tearing which may require secondary correction.

Is a second blepharosplasty required over time?

In our experience, the fat does not return over time, but in very meticulous patients it may be a procedure to be repeated after many years.
