Liposuction is considered to be a safe surgical intervention with a very low incidence of complications, providing it is performed by qualified specialists and with the adequate resources. However, as with any surgical intervention, there is a risk of haemorrhage, infections and complications relating to the use of anaesthesia.
In relation to specific risks, there are the following: a variation in the sensitivity of the skin for a certain amount of time; persistence of the inflammation, colour changes and irregularities in the contours of the skin after the usual recovery period (in these cases additional treatments would be undertaken). The appearance of fatty embolisms or thromboembolisms, alterations in the colour of the skin or sensitivity issues in the treated areas are even more uncommon.
The appearance of small haematomas or inflammation in the treated area should not be considered as a complication. In approximately 10% of cases it is necessary to retouch a specific area after a few months.
